Description
BURGUNDIAN POLYCHROME TILE ROOFTOPS ON THE HOTEL DIEU is a photograph by Carla Parris.
The Hotel-Dieu, a former charitable almshouse in Beaune, France, is an outstanding example of 15th century French Flamboyant Gothic architecture.
Its two wings, built around an interior courtyard, feature a half-timbered gallery, ornate turrets, and steep polychrome roofs covered in glazed multi-colored tiles arranged in geometric patterns.
The architectural style of the roofs, which can be seen in Dijon and elsewhere in Burgundy, is now a landmark of architecture from that region of France, although it is thought to have had its origins in Central Europe (possibly from the Hungarian ceramics master Miklos Zsolnay).
The tiles, which are red, brown, yellow, and green, are arranged in intricate interlaced designs.
Many of the dormer and attic windows display finely detailed wood and iron work.
The Hotel-Dieu was built in the golden age of Burgundy in 1443 by Nicolas Rolin, chancellor of Burgundy, as a hospital for the poor.
Right up until the 20th century, the sick have been cared for by the Sisters of the Hospices de Beaune (the Soeurs Hospitalieres ) in this magnificent building, which came to be known as the Palace of the Poor.
