Description
Bouganvillea remind me of growing up in Orlando, Florida. We had the purple variety of these beauties growing on our backyard fence, flowering profusely in the summer, in all their brilliant color, in our Florida sunshine.
These blossoms were photographed in a residential area in the historic town of St. Augustine, on the Florida Atlantic coast. The entire plant had blossoms in this lovely variety of colors, ranging from orange to pink to magenta.
Visiting St. Augustine also reminded me of growing up in Florida. In the sixties, all fourth graders studied Florida history - Florida under five flags, the historic settlement of St. Augustine, and the like. It was not until I was an adult that I finally visited this town and saw the old fort, the oldest schoolhouse, the city gates, and the location of the Fountain of Youth sought by explorer Ponce de Leon who discovered the city.
It is appropriate that my nostalgic visit to St. Augustine included beautiful flowers, as "Florida" is derived from the Spanish word for flowers. I can't help but think that bouganvillea were likely among the blooms which inspired the name.
