Description
The book of Acts records the sermon the apostle Paul preached from the aereopagus, called Mars Hill, in Athens, Greece. This strategic setting overlooks the agora, or marketplace, which would have been heavily populated with Athenians going about their daily life. It stands in the shadow of the acropolis (which towers over the scene to the right of the area pictured here), which helps understand why Paul's message spoke of God not dwelling in temples made with hands, as the acropolis is the site of the ancient Temple of Athena and the site of worship of pagan gods. Mars Hill was where the thinkers and philosophers of Athens gathered for public debate.
