Artist's Description

Alberobello, Italy is famous for its traditionally built ancient stone houses called trulli. In 1996, the trulli were designated a UNESCO World Heritage site. The urban trulli still extant in Alberobello today, such as the ones in this photograph, date from the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries. One popular theory of the origin of the design of trulli is that due to high taxation on property, the people of Puglia created dry wall constructions that could be dismantled quickly when inspectors were in the area. This is known to have occurred in 1644 to thwart tax inspectors sent by the King of Naples. I found these unique structures whimsical and charming, and kept thinking they looked like a Mediterranean version of hobbit dwellings!

About Carla Parris

Carla Parris

My love of photography grew out of capturing images from my travels, so photographs of beautiful and interesting places comprise a large portion of my portfolio. I am a Southern girl, and love the beauty that is in my back yard, so there are also lots of images from close to home. These include images of our beautiful Gulf Coast beaches, which I visit any time I can! I also enjoy capturing images of interesting flora and fauna, and wildlife images I am able to capture with my newest telephoto lens! I am a painter, as well as a photographer, and offer galleries of paintings and mixed media pieces. My interest in traditional art has spilled over to my post processing of photographs, and in addition to images with minimal post...
