Description
Apalachicola, Florida was once the third busiest port on the Gulf of Mexico It is currently the home of an active seafood industry.
The town has numerous buildings which still reflects its maritime culture. These include old net factories, a former sponge warehouse, and old ship’s chandleries.
On the town’s waterfront on the Apalachicola River, there are both abandoned buildings, such as the rusted tin structure pictured here, and occupied buildings which now house everything from operating oyster processing plants, to a maritime museum offering ecotours, to seafood restaurants serving local seafood and offering outdoor seating on the river.
The town has an extensive historic district with more than 900 historic homes, buildings, and sites. Residential areas have picturesque Victorian homes full of character and charm, some of which were previously owned by sea captains, river pilots, and sponge divers.
