Description
A pair of wild turkeys wanders peacefully through the woods of North Carolina on a September afternoon. Their transparent wattles, or dewlaps, are bright red orange from the backlighting of late afternoon sunlight.
The wattle of a wild turkey is a caruncle (a fleshy excrescence). It is a flap of skin located under the bird’s chin. In males, this fleshy protuberance is used by males to attract female.
