Description
I think of hollyhocks as simple, unpretentious flowers which are a favorite in cottage gardens. However, because their stalks can grow as tall as nine feet, and their flowers can be brightly colored and showy, they can be an impressive component of an English garden, adding an important vertical element to the loose jumble of flowers and plants which characterize an English cottage garden.
Hollyhocks can "fill in" areas in a garden, and "hollyhocking" is an art term referring to painting in elements to fill empty areas of a canvas.
These lovely pale yellow hollyhocks, with a subtler pastel palette than many of these blooms, were photographed in a charming, picturesque village in the beautiful Cotswolds countryside of England.
