Description
Winchcombe, whose name means "'valley with a bend,'' is one of the oldest towns in the Cotswolds region of England, dating back to the Anglo Saxon period in British history.
There are streets in this Gloucestershire county town, located on the River Isbourne, which curve along the valley.
Winchcombe has charming Cotswold stone cottages and medieval architecture, as seen in this image of Hailes Street, named for the ancient abbey located a short distance outside of town.
In England, the difference between a "village" and a "town" is that towns have a cathedral, and Winchcombe has the church of St. Peter.
Winchcombe is also the location of Sudeley Castle, where Katherine Parr, the last of Henry VIIIs six wives, lived and in whose gardens she is buried.
