Description
WADING GREAT BLUE HERON is a digital photograph by Carla Parris.
Great Blue Herons are the largest, and most common, of North American herons.
These tall, stately, long-legged, blue grey birds, which are expert fishers, are often seen wading slowly, with long deliberate steps, or standing motionless, like statues, as they scan for prey. But they move with lightning speed when they spot a fish within range, thrusting their long necks and stabbing with their blade-like bills.
This beautiful Great Blue Heron was photographed in shallow coastal waters at St. Marks National Wildlife Refuge, a national park in northwest Florida, near Tallahassee.
