Description
The Three Sisters are an iconic sight in the Blue Mountains in Australia.
The Blue Mountains National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage site located about fifty miles west of Sydney, Australia, in New South Wales.
The Blue Mountains are actually not mountains at all, but rather an elevated plateau with canyons cut by a number of large rivers. They have been described as "the Grand Canyon with clothes on," because of their forests and heavy vegetation.
The Blue Mountains were a formidable impediment to explorers seeking to reach the central and western parts of the country. These would-be settlers, who attempted to cross the canyons by descending into them, were unsuccessful in traversing the Great Dividing Range until native Aborigines showed them a path across the top of the plateau.
The park features blue-hazed terrain, such as that seen here, whose color is attributable to forests of eucalyptus trees. There are impressive sandstone cliffs and rock formations, lush rainforests, spectacular waterfalls, and wild bush.
