Description
Alberobello, Italy is famous for its traditionally built ancient stone houses called trulli. In 1996, the trulli were designated a UNESCO World Heritage site. The urban trulli still extant in Alberobello today date from the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries. One popular theory of the origin of the design of trulli is that due to high taxation on property, the people of Puglia created dry wall constructions that could be dismantled quickly when inspectors were in the area. This is known to have occurred in 1644 to thwart tax inspectors sent by the King of Naples. I found these unique structures whimsical and charming, and kept thinking they looked like a Mediterranean version of hobbit dwellings!
