Description
TRIO OF ANTIQUE HEIRLOOM ROSES is a vintage, textured digital photograph by Carla Parris.
This trio of heirloom David Austin English roses was, appropriately, photographed in an English friend's back garden in London, England.
David Charles Henshaw Austin is a rose breeder and writer who lives in Shropshire, England. He introduced a brand new class in roses in 1969.
His roses combine the beautiful forms and wonderful fragrances of Old Garden Roses, such as Gallicas, Damasks, and Alba roses, with the repeat-flowering ability and wider color range of modern roses, such as Hybrid Teas and Floribundas.
David Austin roses are lush, floriferous, and incomparably fragrant. They are often densely compacted,as the blossom in the lower left, and have artfully arranged petals, such as this trio of beautiful roses who have softly cupped pastel petals and which have the appearance o fdelicate crepe or fine crumpled silk.
Though Austin's roses are not officially recognised as a separate class of roses by the Royal National Rose Society or the American Rose Society, they are recognized by rosarians and are readily recognized by the public. They are usually denominated "Austin roses" or "English roses."
Since 1969, David Austin and his firm have introduced almost 200 cultivars of roses. Cultivars have been named in honor of his family, famous rosarians, geographical landmarks in Britain, and British writers.
In the twenty-first century, Austin categorized his roses in four groups as a guide to further development: Old Rose Hybrid; the Leander Group; English Musk Roses; and English Alba Hybrids.
Mr. Austin has been awarded the Victoria Medal of Honour by the Royal Horticultural Society and the Dean Hole Medal by the Royal National Rose Society; he has received an Honorary MSc from the University of East London and a lifetime achievement award from the Garden Centre Association; has been awarded an OBE (Order of the British Empire); and in 2010, was named a "Great Rosarian of the World".
