Description
STATELY GREAT BLUE HERON is a digital photograph by Carla Parris.
Great blue herons are tall, long-legged members of the Ardeidae family. These dignified looking birds, which can reach four feet in height, feed primarily on fish, and so dwell near bodies of water.
They are accomplished fishers who walk slowly and gracefully through shallow water, or patiently stand poised, until prey comes within reach of the thrust of their spear-like sharp bills. They are able to fish at night as well as during the day.
These majestic birds, which are prevalent throughout North America, can live over twenty years in the wild.
This beautiful creature was photographed in January, 2016, at St. Marks National Wildlife Reserve on the Gulf Coast in northwest Florida.
This close up portrait of this statuesque bird shows his lovely bluish gray coloration on his feathers and his wispy beard-like plumes on his long S-shaped neck and chest. He is balanced on one leg, near a stream, looking for prey.
