Description
ST. GEORGE ISLAND HISTORIC LIGHTHOUSE is a painterly style digital landscape photograph by Carla Parris.
St. George Island lighthouse is located on a Gulf coast barrier island at the end of the road from the Florida mainland which goes over an impressive bridge, and ends in a T junction at the beach-front road.
The historic beacon stands tall, greeting arriving visitors, vacationers, and residents.
The original Cape St. George Island Lighthouse, which dated back to 1852, was located on Little St. George Island. In Octobe, 2005, it collapsed into the Gulf of Mexico, succumbing to years of pounding surf and beach erosion.
The St. George Lighthouse Association,in cooperation with state and federal government, headed up the enormous job of salvaging pieces of the original structure. This involved volunteer workers tirelessly cleaning mortar off thousands of old bricks.
The lighthouse was relocated to, and reconstructed on, St. George Island. It was based on original plans obtained from the National Archives in Washington, D.C., and used much of the original reclaimed materials.
On December 1, 2008, the reconstructed historic lighthouse was opened to the public.
Tours are now available for energetic visitors wiling to climb 92 stairs to the top!
St. George Island, located in the Gulf of Mexico, near Eastpoint and Apalachicola, has beautiful sugar sand white beaches and gentle Gulf waters. It is a wonderful vacation destination for beach lovers!
This composite image began with a photograph of the lighthouse, which was enhanced with a digital texture from another photograph of a textured wall in an old building in the mountains of North Georgia.
