Description
SANTORINI STEPS is a digital photograph by Carla Parris.
Santorini is a spectacularly beautiful Greek island with volcanic roots.
As pictured here, the town of Fira is located high above the port. There are three ways of getting between the two places: by cable car, on the back of a donkey, or on foot, on all 588 steps built into the caldera.
Although I resorted to the latter, when the cable car lines were very long and we were at risk of literally missing the boat if we waited for it to take us to our awaiting cruise ship, I do not recommend it! If you happen to be walking on the steps at the end of the day, you will not only be sharing the steps with unhappy donkeys who are not at all fond of pedestrians, who have a mind of their own and are often not under the control of their riders, as at any time of day, but you will have to dodge where they have left their calling card on the steps all day long!
This image was taken as we sailed away from this beautiful island in the Aegean Sea. I enjoyed seeing where we had just hiked down, and thought this view gave a great perspective on the elevated position of Fira.
Interestingly, when we had approached the island earlier that morning, we had the impression of snow covered hills. It was only as we got closer that we discerned that what we had been seeing were the white buildings of Oia and Thira.
The position of the towns affords spectacular views of the Mediterranean, and of the caldera, which gives evidence of Santorini's volcanic origins. And Santorini sunsets are legendary! It is a beautiful place which is not to be missed!!

Thank you, A.G.C. I photographed this as we sailed away from Santorini, right after we descended these on foot!

Thanks so much, Anne! We actually walked down ALL those steps when the cable car line was too long for us to make our boat departure!

How kind, Cindy. I really enjoy travel photos, too, and have enjoyed some places vicariously through others' lenses! Thanks so much for the v and fav!

Thanks, Sharon. We did the walk down when the cable car lines were so long that we were at risk of missing our boat if we waited for them. On each of the 588 steps, you take at least 3 steps, so I figured we did a minimum of 2000 steps to descend to the port. Thankfully, we did make our boat, and I shot this photo as we sailed away. Seeing the steps from this view really brought home just what a descent it had been!!
