Description
PINKISH PURPLE SPANISH LAVENDER is a digital photograph by Carla Parris.
Lavender (lavandula) is a genus containing thirty-nine species of flowering plants which, interestingly, are in the mint family (lamiaceae).
Many species of lavender originate from the Mediterranean region, where they grow wild in areas like Provence.
Spanish lavenders (lavandula stoechas), like the pinkish purple one pictured here, are an interesting variety of lavender. They have unusual pineapple-shaped, tufted flower blossoms.
They also have the cute, and descriptive, names of "rabbit ears lavender" or "papillon (butterfly) lavender" because of the petal-like infertile bracts that protrude from the top of flower blossoms.
Spanish Lavender is thought to have been used by ancient Greeks and Romans to scent bath water. "Lavender" is from the Latin word "lavare" meaning "to wash."
This photograph was taken outside a delightful Provence-style shop in Old Town Temecula, California, which sells a variety of fragrant products made from traditional intensely scented English lavender. Some of the more bluish purple English lavender can be seen in the background.
