Description
NOTRE DAME AND LOCKS OF LOVE is a square format digital photograph by Carla Parris.
It should come as no surprise that locks of love, which have proliferated at locations throughout the world, can be found in Paris France, a city which is synonymous with romance!
Typically, lovers inscribe their names or initials to a padlock, attach the lock to a bridge or other public structure, and throw the key away, in this case, into the Seine river, as a symbol of unending love.
In Paris, these cadenas d'amour were initialy affixed to the Pont des Arts bridge. In May, 2010, the Paris Town Hall expressed concern over the practice because of its implications for the preservation of the city's architectural heritage. When the locks on the Pont des Arts mysteriously disappeared on the night of May 11, 2010, the Administration was initially suspected, but they denied responsibility, and it was subsequently discovered the locks had been removed by a student of the Ecole des Beaux-Arts for a sculpture.
In Paris, lovers were not phased by the government's expressed concerns. These declarations of love continued as padlocks immediately began appearing on the Pont de l'Archeveche, pictured here. Today, they can also again be seen on the Pont des Arts.
The Pont de l'Archeveche (Archbishop's Bridge) crosses the Seine River near Notre Dame. It connects the Ile de la City with the Left Bank. Initially a footbridge, it is now a roadbridge, but the narrowest such bridge in the city.
This photograph shows the locks in the foreground, and Notre Dame Cathedral, with its flying buttresses, in the background.
