This pair of eagles, sitting in their nest high atop a pine tree, was photographed in St. Marks Wildlife Preserve in northwest Florida, near Tallahassee.
Their noble profile, silhouetted against a blue sky and framed with surrounding branches, was a striking sight, even at the considerable distance from which this photograph was taken.
I captured this image handheld, at maximum zoom, on my first photo shoot with a new telephoto lens (the Sigma 150-500).
The bald eagle's scientific name, haliaeetus leucocephalus, means sea (halo) eagle (aeetos) with white (leukos) head. The common name for these birds of prey, with their striking, easily recognziable white head, has its origin in the fact that at one time, the word "bald" meant "white" rather than "hairless."
Bald eagles were once an endangered species. In 1963, there were just 417 breeding pairs in the lower 48 states of America. However, conservation efforts have been successful, and the species was removed from the federal list of endangered species in 2007. According to the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, there are now 10,000 breeding pairs of bald eagles in the lower 48 states.
Once paired, bald eagles remain together until one dies. In the wild, these birds can live as long as 30 years.
Bald eagles generally lay from one to three eggs. The 35 days of incubation duties are shared by the male and female.
