Description
MAJESTIC BALD EAGLE is a digital photograph by Carla Parris.
This beautiful creature was photographed at St. Marks Wildlife Preserve in northwest Florida, south of Tallahassee.
While exiting the preserve one afternoon in March, 2015, my husband and I saw a small group of people stopped by the side of the road. When we got out to investigate, we were told there was "a big bald eagle." When I spotted him, I was really taken aback. I was literally startled by his size. He was not big; he was huge. I estimated him to be between three and four feet high, and my husband concurred that he was at least three feet high!
Not only was his size startling and impressive, but instead of being perched high atop a distant tree, where I have previously seen these birds of prey, he was lower and much closer than usual, perched near the edge of a small stand of water on some low vegetation.
The bald eagle's scientific name, haliaeetus leucocephalus, means sea (halo) eagle (aeetos) with white (leukos) head. The common name for these birds of prey, with their striking, easily recognziable white head, has its origin in the fact that at one time, the word "bald" meant "white" rather than "hairless."
Bald eagles were once an endangered species. In 1963, there were just 417 breeding pairs in the lower 48 states of America. However, conservation efforts have been successful, and the species was removed from the federal list of endangered species in 2007. According to the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, there are now 10,000 breeding pairs of bald eagles in the lower 48 states.
