Description
LOCKS GALORE ON THE PONT DE L'ARCHEVECHE IN PARIS is a digital photograph by Carla Parris.
The Pont de l'Archeveche (Archbishop's Bridge) crosses the Seine River near Notre Dame Cathedral, pictured here, connecting the Ile de la Cite with the Left Bank. This narrow former footbridge is now among the locations in Paris where cadenas d"amours, or locks of love, can be seen. The Pont des Arts and the Passerelle Leopold-Sedar-Senghor are two other sites.
In a tradition which is popular throughout the world, lovers inscribe their names or initials on a padlock, affrix the lock to a bridge or other public structure, and throw the key away - in this case, into the Seine river - as a symbol of unending love.
While popular with lovers, this tradition has met with some resistance from Paris governmental officials because of concerns over its effect on the city's architectural heritage and, in some cases, on the structural integrity of bridge railings and possible danger to boats on the river passing beneath the lock-laden bridges.
But for the moment, these declarations of love abound, and on a recent trip to Paris, I even saw padlocks for sale by entrepreneurial Left Bank bouquinistes. Something tells me this tradition isn't going anywhere any time soon in the city of Love!
