Description
Lisbon is the capital of Portugal. It is a port city located on the Atlantic coast of the country where the Tagus River pours into the ocean.
This image shows two landmarks of the coast: the Belem Tower, on the far left, and the Monument to the Discoveries, to its right and more in the foreground.
The Belem Tower, or Torre de Belem, previously known as the Tower of Saint Vincent, built in the 16th century to commemorate Vasco da Gama's expedition to India, was commissioned by King John II. It is a fortified tower in a defense system guarding the mouth of the Tagus river, and serves as a ceremonial gateway to Lisbon. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site due to its role in Portuguese maritime explorations.
The nearby Monument to the Discoveries,or Padreo dos Descobrimentos, on the north bank of the Tagus, was built in 1960 to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the death of Henry the Navigator. It represents the prow of a caravel, a three-sailed ship used in Portuguese explorations. On both sides there are ramps with carved figures of explorers, monarchs, cartographers, and other significant figures from Portugal's Age of Discovery.
In this image, beautiful bathes the entire scene in a subtle pinkish warm glow.
