Description
GLORIOUS DAYLILY is a macro digital photograph by Carla Parris which has been hand colored using watercolor pencils.
This hybrid artwork began with a photograph of a neighbor's lovely orange double daylily following a summer afternoon rain. The raindrops were still on the petals, giving the beautiful flower, with its glorious color, a fresh and vibrant look.
I printed the photograph at a low opacity, and then hand colored the image using watercolor pencils. I took some artistic license with my pencil work, as well as with my brush work when I applied water to release the color which had been drawn in with the watercolor pencils. Accordingly, the final image is not a pure photographic representation of the flower, but my artistic interpretation.
For those not familiar with watercolor pencils, they are a really fun way to work with watercolor. Some of you may remember yesteryear coloring books which had dots all over the drawing which, when brushed with water, released their color. Applying water, with a paint brush, to areas colored with watercolor pencils, feel very much like my childhood experience with those coloring books.
I particularly like the wavy lines of the stamen, and the central petals, and the lovely curve of the surrounding petals, particularly the one in the upper left corner.
This image draws the viewer's eye into the deep throat of the flower, from which the petals, pistil, and stamen emerge. It is also the point from which the lines of color on the variegated petals extend.
This double daylily is more frilly and graceful than its more humble single cousins.
Daylilies are part of the hemerocallis botanical genus.
