Description
GARGOYLES OF NOTRE DAME DE PARIS is a digital photograph by Carla Parris which features a profile of some of the many gargoyles which adorn the Gothic cathedral of Notre Dame.
Most gargoyles in architecture serve as waterspouts. They are necessary on stone buildings to prevent rainwater from eroding the mortar.
Gargoyles often protrude far beyond the edge of the structure, in order to convey water as far away from the masonry walls as possible.
When these stone carvings, called grotesques, are merely ornamental, they are more properly called chimera or bosses.
