Description
Fort Clinch State Park, on Amelia Island, Florida's northernmost barrier island, is situated on the Atlantic coast, overlooking St. Mary's River, which forms the border between Florida and Georgia.
Fort Clinch, built in 1847, is a well preserved Civil War era fort which served as a Union garrison during the Civil War.
Much of the drive to the fort passes through maritime hammocks with towering live oak trees dripping with Spanish moss. It passes coastal grasslands; Willow Pond Trail, which winds around freshwater ponds; and Egan's Creek Marsh, on the west boundary of the park, which is a saltwater marsh.
