Description
FLORIDA WILD TURKEY is a digital photograph by Carla Parris.
This image features a profile of a male wild turkey, called a gobbler, strutting through the woods.
This noble bird has heavily patterned wings, rich brown tail feathers, a long beard hanging below his iridescently colored chest, and a red wattle (called a snood) protruding beyond his beak.
The turkey is a large bird which is able to fly, and prefers to roost at night in trees, away from ground predators.
It has excellent vision. Its eyes are on the side of its head, and this, coupled with its ability to turn its head, gives it a 360 degrees range of vision.
One of America's founding fathers, Ben Franklin, lamented the selection of the bald eagle as the national bird. He would have preferred the turkey!
Turkeys, which are native to North America, are associated with Thanksgiving, when they are often the centerpiece of a lavish family holiday meal which includes stuffing or dressing, vegetables, cranberry sauce, and dessert. As much as I enjoy that traditional meal, I do hope this fella doesn't met that fate!
