Description
BLUE MOUNTAINS is a digital photograph from Down Under by Carla Parris.
Blue Mountains National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage site located about fifty miles west of Sydney, Australia, in New South Wales.
The term "mountains" is actually a misnomer, as the Blue Mountains are in fact an elevated plateau dissected by large rivers. They have been described as "the Grand Canyon with clothes on," because they are canyon-like, but with heavy vegetation.
The Blue Mountains, in the east of Australia, were an impediment to early settlers seeking to reach the central and western parts of the country. They were unsuccessful in traversing the Great Dividing Range by descending into, and climbing out of, the steep canyons. It was only when native Aborigines showed settlers a route across the top of the plateau that they were able to reach, and settle, inland and western regions.
The park, which spans 247,000 hectares, features blue-hazed terrain, such as that pictured here. The color is attributable to forests of eucalyptus trees.
The national park also has impressive sandstone cliffs and rock formations, lush rain forests, spectacular waterfalls, and wild bush.
Popular tourist sights are the iconic Three Sisters rock formation, spectacular Wentworth Falls, and the Katoomba Scenic Railway, descending into lush rainforest vegetation, which is the steepest railway in the world.

One of my favourite places Carla...beautifully photographed. I am so pleased with your description including some history as well. Although not high the terrain is rugged and, there are still areas which have not been fully explored and new species of trees etc found..

Thanks so much, Heidi. This was my first sale on FAA, so I have always been partial to this photograph!
