Description
BLACK DRAGON SEAHORSE is a digital photograph of an underwater scene by Carla Parris.
This exotic swimming creature was photographed at the seahorse exhibit at the world class aquarium in Monterey, on the Pacific coast, which is one of the California coastal town's top tourist attractions.
Although I have entitled this image,"Black Dragon Seahorse," it is actually a pipefish and may more technically be a black sea dragon, although I saw it in the seahorse exhibition. .
This, and the equally out of the ordinary leafy sea dragon which I was also able to see at the Monterey Bay Aquarium, are among the most unusual and exotic underwater creatures I have ever seen!
One of the distinctive features of sea dragons is their long snout. They also have a different tail from their close relatives, the seahorses.
If you visit Monterey, on spectacular Highway One, don't miss a visit to the aquarium and to the seahorse exhibit!! The jellyfish exhibit is also outstanding.
Because the aquarium is strategically situated on the edge of the Pacific Ocean, its impressive kelp forest exhibit is naturally fed by ocean water, and boasts a wonderful collection of marine creatures which can be seen behind a tall glass partition.
The aquarium also offers an area where irresistibly playful otters can be viewed.
